A Whole-School Approach to Promoting Languages
Lane, Nathan
Babel, v50 n2-3 p66-67 2015
Languages teachers are all aware of the significant advantages and benefits learning a language provides, and believe in the importance of second language acquisition. However, why is it that languages teachers need to justify learning a second language and work hard to encourage more students to see the importance of learning a language and to continue their language studies into the post compulsory years? It is said to be because of society's "monolingual mindset". It is the successful breaking through of this "monolingual mindset" and encouraging more students to see the great benefits in continuing their language studies past the non-compulsory years that is the challenge for languages teachers. To this end, this article describes the languages learning implemented initiatives taking place at St. Columba's College (Melbourne Australia) that raised the profile of the department and encouraged more students to continue their language studies.
