Reflections after a Lifetime of Change
James, Frank
Australian Educational Computing, v17 n1 p7-11 Jun 2002
The events of September 11, 2001, the terrorist attack that destroyed the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center in New York changed the world, and while the effects were much reduced in faraway Australia, they became immediately apparent online. Any view through the global window was likely to be changed, an impossible to anticipate. To me, "think globally and act locally" still sounded like good advice, and while I had retired, I had no more retired from going online than I had retired from being on the phone, so I was going online, to "re-think globally and react locally". I was teaching myself about the changed online world. Everyone's online experience is unique, and I guess you and others will want to go online to re-think their changed online world individually. In the twentieth century, while I did a lot of "travelling hopefully", I kept hoping to arrive. And for a short time in retirement in the twenty first century, I thought I had arrived--but around the world, little remained unchanged after the events of September 11, 2001. Here is my story of my online DAY and of what I've been learning about events following September 11, 2001 and about telecommunications and change in the twenty first century. (Contains 25 online resources.)
