Kagle, Jeanne; Hay, Anthony G. – American Biology Teacher, 2007
Horizontal gene transfer, the exchange of genetic material between bacteria, is a potentially important factor in the degradation of synthetic compounds introduced to the environment and in the acquisition of other characteristics including antibiotic resistance. This game-based activity illustrates the role of horizontal gene transfer in the…

Dudley, Aimee M.; Cardozo, David Lopes – American Biology Teacher, 2006
In this paper, the authors describe their development of an introductory laboratory course in microbiology that is geared towards students in grades 8-10. The course was developed as part of the Mentoring for Science Program at Harvard Medical School, an outreach program created by the Minority Faculty Development Program, directed towards…

Glickstein, Neil – American Biology Teacher, 2006
Bacterial loading in water from anthropogenic sources is of common interest in both student research projects and to regulatory agencies. The presence of fecal coliform bacteria in natural waters can be the deciding indicator for how the bodies of water are classified for use. Since current tests are not specific, it is difficult to determine…

Baker, William P.; Leyva, Kathryn J. – American Biology Teacher, 2006
Virology is an integral part of introductory biology courses. Research and experience indicate that, although the topic is a difficult one for many students, the effectiveness of instruction is enhanced when assignments actively engage the students in the generation of scientific explanations. These authors have found that the methods and…

Dunnivant, Frank M. – American Biology Teacher, 2006
Most chemistry and biology teachers will agree that students have a "disconnect" between these two disciplines. This likely results from the categorization of the topics into two classes or two separate years of study. In this article, the author provides one example of how the two disciplines can be related in an environmental application that…

Woolverton, Christopher J.; Woolverton, Lyssa N. – American Biology Teacher, 2006
Toilet paper (TP) composition and physical characteristics were used to model scientific investigations that combined several "National Science Education Standards." Experiments with TP permitted the integration of TP history, societal change resulting from invention, mathematics (including geometry and statistics), germ theory, and personal…

Wassmer, Gary T.; Kipe-Nolt, Judith A.; Chayko, Catherine A. – American Biology Teacher, 2006
We present an effective, engaging, and fun method for teaching how the use or misuse of antibiotics can select for resistant strains of bacteria. This method uses candy as a substitute for strains of bacteria varying in resistance to a given antibiotic. Results and discussion are presented in the context of this emerging healthcare crisis.

Rogan, Brian; Lemke, Michael; Levandowsky, Michael; Gorrell, Thomas – American Biology Teacher, 2005
The Winogradsky column demonstrates how the metabolic diversity of prokaryotes transforms sulfur to different forms with varying redox states and hence, supplies nutrients and/or energy to the organism. The Winogardsky column is an excellent way to show that not all bacteria are pathogens and they have an important role in the geochemical cycling…

Petrie, Angela; Finkel, Steven E.; Erbe, Jarrod – American Biology Teacher, 2005
A novel method of studying the generation of genetic diversity in an undergraduate microbiology laboratory is described. The basis of this approach is the accumulation of mutations that confer a competitive advantage, or growth advantage in stationary phase (GASP) phenotype, to E. coli grown in stationary phase for extended periods of time.

Wagner, Stephen C. – American Biology Teacher, 2005
An approach where students first develop and make a medium to grow an Lactobacillus sanfranciscensis (LS) strain, the bacterium used to make San Francisco sourdough bread is described. It offers an effective and donable strategy to teach about industrial microbiology process and the types of organisms used in these endeavors.
