Profiles in Partnership: Finding Strength in Collaborative Leadership
Ballard, Steve; Long, Patricia N.
About Campus, v9 n5 p16-22 Nov-Dec 2004
Shifting an entire institution to embrace undergraduate education as a central mission is a daunting task, particularly if that institution has a history of professional and graduate education and enrolls many thousands of students. Steve Ballard, until this year provost of the University of Missouri-Kansas City (UMKC), and Pat Long, UMKC vice-chancellor for student affairs, were partners over the past several years in moving their institution toward a greater emphasis on undergraduate education. Now, the institution's first of five values--Education First--reflects its primary commitment to lifelong learning and to the recognition that students are integral to all the institution does. From this first value have emerged all of the institution's recent efforts in the interest of enhanced student learning. In this article, Ballard and Long talk with Judy Rogers, associate professor of Educational Leadership at Miami University, about the joys and challenges of working together to move the campus.
