Studying the history of the development of different subjects in the school curriculum can help us better understand the social processes involved, as well as the theoretical issues. The attempt to have environmental studies recognized as an A-level subject in British secondary schools is discussed as an example. (IS)

Described are the results of a four-year action research project that investigated the reasons for girls' underachievement in science and technology and tested teacher-developed change strategies. Boys participating continued to be much more interested in science than the girls. Changes in option choice behavior were very small for both sexes. (RM)

Reviews books by S. Modgil and R. Willey on racial inequality and multicultural education. Suggests tentative changes in the analytic framework in which multicultural issues are placed. Reports results of a case study which evaluated middle-school students' responses to a cultural awareness unit on India. The class consisted of one Jamaican, ten Indians, and seven English students. Privately taped discussions indicate that the teacher's methods led white students to believe that their views were inadmissable in the classroom. (KC)
