Thinking outside the Book Box: Using BOOKMATCH to Develop Independent Book Selection
Wedwick, Linda; Wutz, Jessica
Voices from the Middle, v14 n1 p20-29 Sep 2006
When the authors realized that successful book selection is not a natural skill for all learners, they developed a tool to support self-selection of independent reading material without book leveling. This tool is called BOOKMATCH, and it supports readers for whom book selection is "complicated." BOOKMATCH is an acronym in which each letter represents a criterion that students can use to select a book for independent reading: Book length, Ordinary language, Organization, Knowledge prior to the book, Manageable text, Appeal to genre, Topic appropriateness, Connection, High interest. This article focuses on the use of BOOKMATCH within a middle school classroom, and describes how a reading workshop classroom was transformed by the use of BOOKMATCH as both an instructional tool and a student support system for independent reading. Aside from enhancing students' attitudes about and interest in reading by helping them find "just right" books, teachers also learned much about middle school readers and about their own students through conferencing and book choice.
