Collaboration for School Mental Health Needs: A Case for High-Leverage Practices in a Culturally Responsive Framework
Vanessa Eve Tucker; Laura Jean Matson
TEACHING Exceptional Children, v56 n3 p148-158 2024
In this article we propose a model of collaboration for school teams as a guide to the provision of effective, individualized and culturally responsive school-based mental health supports. When school teams embark on this process, they must be ready to provide a continuum of care within a comprehensive plan. Collaboration is essential when working within this continuum. Using a case-based approach, we provide a framework for working together leveraging the content and concepts of the three High Leverage Practices (HLP's) for Collaboration within the MTSS model. We walk the reader step by step through a process that includes using the HLPs to strengthen practice, assist in planning and delivering collaboration. Imperative to the process is developing appropriate IEPs and establishing methods of input, including the family and outside providers. Using the HLPs as a framework can assist teams to develop and create a strong shared vision alongside and in support of the family and most importantly, the students we serve.
