Strategies: A Journal for Physical and Sport Educators, v18 n2 p11-12 Nov-Dec 2004
With the rising trend toward childhood obesity and increasing costs of health insurance, quality physical education programs play a critical role in educating children on the benefits of physical activity. What must be done first in any physical education program is to review the curriculum to ensure that it reflects best practices. This article describes a matrix developed by physical educators that allows teachers to demonstrate that the curriculum they are teaching addresses the physical education standards and benchmarks. The beauty of this type of matrix is that it can be adjusted to fit any curriculum, as it is simply a visual tool that demonstrates integration of one curriculum area into others. This tool also demonstrates how a quality physical education program can provide students with the skills and knowledge to become active for a lifetime, as well as contribute to their academic achievement.
