Cooperative Learning in Physical Education
Hannon, James C.; Ratliffe, Thomas
Strategies: A Journal for Physical and Sport Educators, v17 n5 p29-32 May-Jun 2004
A methodology that has not received as much attention in the physical education setting as in other subject areas is cooperative learning. Cooperative learning has been used for many years in math, science, and history, but not until recently has the concept been applied to physical education. Research conducted on cooperative learning has shown its effectiveness in the classroom in helping students achieve the national physical education standards, particularly standards 5, 6 and 7. Cooperative learning is an instructional format in which students work together in small, structured groups to master the content of the lesson. The teacher's role is to clarify practice goals, ensure tasks are understood, demonstrate appropriate behavior, supply direction, set time limits, state objectives clearly, facilitate learning by monitoring group progress, and provide instruction and guidance in effective group techniques. The teacher must also be sure that the commonly agreed upon goals set for individuals and their groups are attainable. The responsibility of the students in the cooperative learning environment varies. Students can be performers, recorders, observers, presenters, timers, leaders, and collectors. This article presents some tips for teachers on how to apply cooperative learning in their classroom and some activities where students can work together towards a common goal.
