Class Meetings in Physical Education
Millard, Linda
Strategies: A Journal for Physical and Sport Educators, v17 n3 p29-30 Jan-Feb 2004
Physical educators are often frustrated when a student behaves in a way that compromises the learning environment for the entire group. Inappropriate behavior may vary from kicking a ball across the room rather than returning it under the net, to consistent wisecracking during class. When such behavior is limited to one or two students, individual discipline often results in a more appropriate response. However, when bad conduct spreads to multiple students, individual discipline may not be enough. One method physical educators can use to address widespread inappropriate behavior is to hold a class meeting. This article describe the strategies to structure a class meeting in ways that can be successful in a physical education setting, but the principles also apply to sport team meetings. Meeting with students to discuss ways they can show empathy or help others learn can reverse inappropriate behavior. While it may appear that class meetings take time away from physical activity, the change in student response justifies the time spent in creating a more productive learning environment. Allowing students to participate in establishing the rules for appropriate behavior encourages growth and responsibility.
