Movement Opens Pathways to Learning
Leppo, Marjorie; Davis, Diane
Strategies: A Journal for Physical and Sport Educators, v19 n2 p11-16 Nov-Dec 2005
This article presents a framework for movement activities upon which physical educators and early childhood teachers can build appropriate learning activities that reinforce the connection between the mind and body for children between the ages of two and seven. The authors discuss Piaget's stages of cognitive development. The authors hope that this article will encourage physical educators and classroom teachers of young children (between the ages of two and seven) to consider the important interconnection between the mind and body during the early stages of learning. This article presents a variety of movement activities that are appropriate for young children and reinforce the mind and body connection. Among other things, the authors present questions and answers that provide a fundamental framework upon which teachers can build effective movement experiences that support cognitive development.
