The Time Is Now: Advocate for Your Physical Education Program
Johnson, Lynn V.
Strategies: A Journal for Physical and Sport Educators, v19 n1 p12-17 Sep-Oct 2005
Physical educators have every right to expect physical education to have a legitimate place in the school curriculum and to have the importance of physical activity reflected in a program's time requirements and budget. Physical educators should expect administrators and colleagues to give them equal opportunities to teachers of other subjects because of recent research and confirmation that physical education is critical to the education and well being of all children. The purpose of this article is to discuss the responsibility of physical educators to develop understanding and respect for physical education by providing, and advocating for, quality programs. The article first discusses three questions that physical educators must consider, and then provides resources and specific examples of methods that physical educators can use to effectively advocate for their program. There are a number of methods available to physical educators to allow them to share this type of information in an ongoing fashion. The rest of this article will describe examples of traditional and innovative advocacy methods that take advantage of available technology. These examples are intended as starting points, and physical educators are encouraged to modify and adapt these methods to make them appropriate for their school, community, and physical education program.
