Assessment in the Weight Room
Jacobsen, Tim; Jenkins, Jayne
Strategies: A Journal for Physical and Sport Educators, v19 n3 p11-18 Jan-Feb 2006
Physical educators continually investigate purposeful, meaningful, and authentic means to assess student learning in relationship to the national standards. Here, the authors describe a means of assessing several of the national standards for physical education in a high school weight training class. Adopting the North Dakota Standards for Physical Education (North Dakota Department of Public Instruction, 2000) that were based on the national standards for physical education (NASPE, 1995), the authors present a comparison between the national standards and North Dakota standards. They provide steps for assessing physical education standards in weight training and offer suggestions for making assessment functional within the busy context of a secondary physical education teacher's day.
