Helping Students Become Active and Smart!
Holt, Rhonda
Strategies: A Journal for Physical and Sport Educators, v18 n3 p10 Jan-Feb 2005
With the recently released Position Statement, "Physical Activity for Children Guidelines" (NASPE, 2004), the time is ideal for physical educators to look for ways to encourage students to be active outside the classroom. The first guideline recommends "children accumulate at least 60 minutes, and up to several hours of age-appropriate physical activity on all, or most days of the week." This, along with NASPE Physical Education Content Standard 3, "Participates regularly in physical activity," is adequate motivation for physical educators to explore avenues for helping students to not only recognize the importance of being physically active on a regular basis, but to find exciting and rewarding ways to be so. This brief article provides several ideas on how to promote physical fitness among students. Among other things, a 15-minute nature walk around the school is a great opportunity for teachers to integrate physical activity and learning among students.
