Successfully Integrating Novel Games into the Curriculum: Netball for All
Clancy, Mary; Portman, Penelope; Bowersock, Amy
Strategies: A Journal for Physical and Sport Educators, v20 n6 p11-16 Jul-Aug 2007
Novel activities enrich a curriculum by allowing students to learn new skills and knowledge, to apply previously learned skills in new ways, and to be introduced to a new challenge that can increase student interest and motivation. This article first presents several considerations when adding a new game to the physical education curriculum. It then introduces the game of netball as a novel invasion-type game addition to a basketball, team handball, or soccer curriculum. Netball combines essential skills and tactical elements that are present in these other games. By considering the suggestions given in this article, a physical education teacher can integrate a novel game into the present curriculum and ensure student opportunities for cooperation, success, and safety.
