The work of Leta Hollingworth (1886-1939) concerning gifted adolescents is reviewed in the context of current thinking. A new synthesis is offered which sees the gifted adolescent in a state of disequilibrium (defined as discrepancy between expectancy and achievement) and constantly in a process of adjusting to the disequilibrium.
