Boyes, E.; Stanisstreet, M. – Research in Science and Technological Education, 1991
Combined free response questionnaire and interview procedure are used to probe students' ideas regarding how they believe they see both luminous and nonluminous objects and how they think they hear source of sound. From large sample of students studied (n=1901), prevalence of ideas in different age groups is compared, and progression can be seen.…

Taber, Keith S. – Research in Science and Technological Education, 1991
Students in their first weeks of secondary school were asked to select from a list those topics they would be interested in studying in science. Gender differences were found in that boys predominately selected topics with a mechanical connection, whereas girls predominantly selected topics related to human biology. (Author)

Bullock, K. M.; Scott, W. A. H. – Research in Science and Technological Education, 1993
Investigated the nature, expectations, and experiences of "mature" (over 25-years old) entrants to teaching shortage subjects (n=676). Among the reported findings is that most of these students felt the emphasis on teacher education should remain on the notion of practice. (PR)

Witenoff, Shalamit; Lazarowitz, Reuven – Research in Science and Technological Education, 1993
Presents samples of educational material adapted for laboratory use on the subject of the pH scale, dilution skills, and their relevance to biology. The experiments were developed for use in both ninth-grade heterogeneous and tracked classes in biology. Students were assessed for academic achievement in relation to their operational reasoning…

Tamir, Pinchas; Caridin, Hani – Research in Science and Technological Education, 1993
Describes a study designed to achieve the following goals: (1) compare the perceptions of learning environment in biology and chemistry classrooms by Jewish and Arab students; (2) identify gender effects in the Arab sample on learning environments; and (3) compare the perceptions of Arab students in rural and city schools. (ZWH)

Griffiths, Alan K.; Thompson, Jeffrey – Research in Science and Technological Education, 1993
Describes a study that interviewed 32 students to determine their understanding of the meaning of a range of science processes. A total of 63 misconceptions was identified. (ZWH)

Fraser, Barry J.; Wilkinson, William J. – Research in Science and Technological Education, 1993
Describes an instrument developed to assess students' or teachers' perceptions of five dimensions of actual or preferred classroom environment: student cohesiveness, open-endedness, integration, rule clarity, and material environment. Instrument is included in the appendix. (ZWH)

Kariotoglou, P.; Psillos, D. – Research in Science and Technological Education, 1993
Discusses a study designed to investigate pupils' conceptions about fluids and particularly liquids in equilibrium, with reference to the concept of pressure. Based upon the results obtained, several mental models of how pupils understand liquids in equilibrium were proposed. (ZWH)

Moore, F. L. – Research in Science and Technological Education, 1994
Discusses a study designed to obtain information about the activities of the coordinators (teachers with subject expertise) in regard to both initial teacher training and inservice education and training for science coordination. (ZWH)

Toh, Kok-Aun; Woolnough, Brian E. – Research in Science and Technological Education, 1994
Involves 135 eighth graders in a study designed to identify those conditions that favor the transfer of laboratory-based science process skills to other areas of study. Data showed that a significant correlation exists between planning and performing (p<0.01), communication and interpreting (p<0.01), and performing and interpreting (p<0.05). (ZWH)

Brown, C. R.; Moore, F. L. – Research in Science and Technological Education, 1994
Analyzes construct validity of two different methods of assessing practical skills in advanced level biology by considering how candidates' scores on practical objectives relate to each other and to those on theory papers. Differences were found in the interrelationships among scores of the two methods. (ZWH)

Wildy, Helen; Wallace, John – Research in Science and Technological Education, 1994
Focuses on the work of one experienced physics teacher and his attempts to come to grips with a new curriculum. This study confirms that change is not a linear process but is characterized by uncertainty, hesitancy, and gradualism. Strategies to help others change are provided. (ZWH)

Jungwirth, Ehud – Research in Science and Technological Education, 1990
Discussed is whether, and to what extent, science teachers critically and spontaneously attend to the logical structure of situations, and whether they need prompting, or completely fail to do so. The relationship between the results of this study and science teachers' pre- and in-service education is discussed. (Author/KR)
