The Metalinguistics of Fingerspelling: An Alternative Way to Increase Written Vocabulary in Congenitally Deaf Readers.
Hirsh-Pasek, Kathy
Reading Research Quarterly, v22 n4 p455-74 Fall 1987
Reports on three experiments that explored the metalinguistic competence of 26 deaf students to segment and manipulate their fingerspelled lexicons. Indicates their metalinguistic sophistication correlated selectively and significantly with reading success. Also reports on a training experiment that showed that deaf students identified more sight words when encouraged to decode into fingerspelling. (SKC)
