Managing Support for Learning within the Curriculum: A Holistic Approach. Perspective
Kirk, Kate
Perspectives London policy and practice in higher education, v8 n1 p11-17 2004
Support for Learning is a feature of the learning and teaching strategy for first-year undergraduate students on the Applied Social Studies/Community and Social Studies programme in the Department of Applied Community Studies at Manchester Metropolitan University. The programme provides professional education and training in social work, youth and community work and related "caring" professions. The strategy has evolved over many years and has recently been strengthened to take account of student feedback and the wide range of learning requirements of an increasingly diverse student body. Support for Learning on the programme is owned, delivered and administered by a team consisting of both academic and administrative staff. Furthermore, the "team" is effectively extended to include colleagues in other support services including the University Student Services Department, the Library and Information Systems. This is a key feature of the "holistic" approach.
