Spheres of Possibility: Linking Service-Learning and the Visual Arts
Jeffers, Carol S.
National Art Education Association
This book began with the idea that it would describe a set of arts-based service-learning courses developed and implemented during the unique multi-year project, Linking Service-Learning and the Visual Arts. These courses, in photography, graphic design, ceramics, and art education were to be offered as models, perhaps, or better yet, as starting-points, to readers looking to design their own; to any researcher or practitioner interested in exploring service-learning and its possible linkages to visual art/culture. This book is offered then as a story, told in three interrelated parts by many protagonists--active participants in service-learning, both inside and outside the Linking Project--who weave together their experiences and discoveries in dialectics that create the spheres of possibility. Readers are invited to create new spheres, to take these examples and find their own ways of bringing children and adolescents to universities, of inviting university students to come to work with them; of expanding classroom projects to address community needs, and to involve community arts centers, galleries, and non-profit agencies. These, then, are the stories of movement in, through and beyond known spaces, of transcending barriers and boundaries to discover the potential for growth and community inherent within service-learning. This book is organized into three sections. Section I, Introductions, includes the following chapters: (1) The Project; (2) A Metaphor; (3) Dialectics; and (4) The Promise. Section II, Boundaries, includes the next series of chapters in the book: (5) Uncharted Territories; (6) Challenges By Distance; (7) Perspectives on Poverty; (8) Assumptions about Art and Aesthetics; and (9) Spaces for Dialogue. Section III, Connections, presents the concluding chapters: (10) Connections to Place; (11) Connections to Self; (12) Connections to Others; (13) Connections to, through and with Art; and (14) Impacts. An epilogue and list of references are also included.
