Transfer and Transform: Bridging the Credits Gap from Community Colleges to Four-Year Colleges
Tonya Johnson
Journal on Excellence in College Teaching, v35 n1 p9-20 2024
Many community college students majoring in education plan to transfer to four-year institutions, but they are hampered when course credits do not transfer. This disproportionately impacts low-income students, contributing to low graduation rates. A New York State community college professor and a four-year college professor collaborated to improve the transfer credit success of a community college teacher education course. This article describes lessons learned from redesigning and co-teaching the course, which was accepted for transfer credit. Concerns about community college students' ability to compete with bachelor's degree students were unfounded. Teachers and students considered the replicable pilot program a success.
