Identifying Raised-Line Drawings by Touch: A Hard but Not Impossible Task
Picard, Delphine; Lebaz, Samuel
Journal of Visual Impairment & Blindness, v106 n7 p427-431 Jul 2012
The topic of tangible drawings for individuals who are blind is an important one to the field of visual impairment. However, it has not been addressed so far in a literature review. In this article, the authors review the selected literature on tactile picture naming and provide a quantitative look at this literature by presenting results related to accuracy (percentage of correct naming). They attempt to identify the factors that influence accurate picture naming when identifying raised-line drawings. This review of the literature found that the identification of tactile pictures is a difficult but not impossible task for individuals who are blind and those who are sighted. Such a task is characterized by wide variations in accuracy with no consistent effect because of visual status. The review suggests that the ability to identify pictures accurately depends mainly on (1) the complexity with which objects are depicted; (2) the availability of information about the drawings; and (3) the selection of optimum exploratory procedures.
