Self-Help Medical Literature in 19th-Century Canada and the Rhetorical Convention of Plain Language.
Connor, Jennifer J.
Journal of Technical Writing and Communication, v24 n3 p265-83 1994
Examines self-help medical literature in 19th-century Canada. Shows that while authors repeatedly called for "plain" language in contrast to mysterious terminology employed by medical practitioners, comparison of their style with that of medical textbook authors reveals few real differences. Concludes that the posture adopted by Canadian self-help medical literature reflected more a rhetorical convention than reality. (SR)
