Perspective: It's How You Play the Game
Spero, Susan B.
Journal of Museum Education, v36 n3 p297-304 Fall 2011
The pages of this journal issue offer many inspiring technology projects and insights that support the everyday work of educators. But there remains the challenge of managing that work with tools that are ever changing and plentiful. Over the years of working with technology of all types, the author has adopted a specific stance toward technology that has helped her to better manage her work with it. This article shares aspects of her approach. She suggests that museum educators can get into the digital game if they just take their seats at the table where decisions are being made about how to use tools to reach their audiences. They need to have increased awareness of digital options that support the work they do because it is very clear that the digital world is here, quite present, and won't be going away. To score they need to understand the rules and find the strategies that work for them. Otherwise, it is their museums that will lose the chance to connect with their audiences where they are.
