FCS Helps High School Students Explore Teaching as a Career
Kamin, Kim
Journal of Family and Consumer Sciences, v96 n1 p19 2004
In Texas, family and consumer sciences (FCS) teachers provide high school students who are interested in teaching or a related career an opportunity to investigate it further through an internship entitled "Ready, Set, Teach". Students who apply must have been enrolled in a child development, parenting, or individual and family life course. This course, which lays the groundwork for college, includes interactions with representatives from local universities and field trips to educational sites. "Ready, Set, Teach" is an excellent opportunity for an FCS teacher to bring the body of knowledge to life. Mentor teachers who have an early childhood background are especially positive about this course because they have a lifespan perspective and understand the important developmental tasks at this stage of life.
