Clemson Collaborates on School Readiness in South Carolina
Weatherford, Carol G.; Bagby, Sara Ayers
Journal of Family and Consumer Sciences, v96 n4 p70-71 2004
"Extending Education" focused on national education goals of readiness for school and retention until graduation and on strategies outlined in the American 2000 plan. The formal education system helps young children acquire basic knowledge and competencies. However, national educational goals identified needs for: (1) greater linkages between schools and communities and between schools and real-world issues; and (2) for a holistic approach to solving problems and meeting needs of children and families. "Extending Education" was initiated in three counties of South Carolina that represented diverse sections of the state. Sites were selected only if both the local public school system and county Cooperative Extension Service personnel were willing to work collaboratively to solve community problems. State and local agencies, private organizations, and community leaders collaborated with College of Education and Cooperative Extension Service deans and other professionals at Clemson University. The goals of "Extending Education" were accomplished through locally identified activities. Strategies were selected to enhance children's learning, retrain professionals, develop leadership skills within school and Extension personnel and community volunteers, coordinate resources for a healthier life for children, and empower communities and professionals to create nurturing, healthy environments for children.
