"Even Start" Improves Literacy in Colorado
Love, Cathleen T.; Thayer, Marilyn
Journal of Family and Consumer Sciences, v96 n4 p63-64 2004
Through a grant from the U.S. Department of Education, the staff and faculty of Colorado State University and the Poudre School District collaborated to implement an "Even Start" family literacy project to reduce the level of poverty and illiteracy for families in the Poudre Valley Mobile Home Park. To truly establish a partnership based on trust and mutual respect, it was imperative for program staff and community partners to be responsive to the priorities, goals, and interests that were identified by the participant families. These key fundamental values--family-centered and partnership with the families and the community--are reflected in the mission statement of the project: The "Even Start" Family Centered Learning Program is a partnership involving families and the community in attaining economic, social, and academic success. Although the federal funding ended at the completion of the 4-year grant cycle, the shared vision and commitment to the residents in the mobile home park remain strong.
