Autism: An Interdisciplinary Approach
Elias, Janice G.; Mincher, Jeanine; Hawkins, Carol; Mosca, Nancy; Mancini, Noreen M.
Journal of Family and Consumer Sciences, v96 n4 p 54-55 2004
Professionals in family and consumer sciences (FCS) encounter children with an autism diagnosis more frequently than they did in the past, but often have had no specific preparation for working with this population. The Paula and Anthony Rich Center for the Study and Treatment of Autism at Youngstown State University was established to improve the lives of individuals with autism by providing education, research, and support to professionals and families. A professor of FCS, who serves as Academic Coordinator for The Rich Center, facilitates, through a mini-grant fund, faculty involvement with The Rich Center. Collaboration has occurred among disciplines, academic departments, community agencies, faculty, and students. Examples of this interdisciplinary approach are presented.
