Collaborating to Eliminate Domestic Violence
Berger, Ami
Journal of Family and Consumer Sciences, v96 n3 p73-74 2004
On June 16, 2004, the College of Human Ecology (CHE), University of Minnesota partnered with a Twin Cities community service agency to host an event that raised awareness of domestic violence and also raised funds. "The Sheila Shawl Extravaganza," was a celebration of Sheila Wellstone's life (she was the wife of Minnesota senator Paul Wellstone.) When Mrs. Wellstone and her husband were killed, Hagberg--a personal friend of both Wellstones--created the "Sheila Shawl" project in her memory. Through Silent Witness, she asked that individuals knit shawls in honor of Sheila; the shawls were then given to families of women who had been killed by domestic violence. The event was planned by a committee of Silent Witness supporters and CHE faculty and staff--the first time the College collaborated with a community organization in this way. In addition, other units within the CHE joined this collaboration. The Goldstein Museum of Design, for example, displayed the shawls in a special exhibit for the month prior to the Extravaganza.
