Leading amidst COVID-19: A Systematic Review of Higher Education Research Studies

The COVID-19 pandemic required higher education administrators to lead their institutions through a period of unprecedented ambiguity and complexity. In just two short years, a new set of skills and leadership tactics for academic leadership emerged for successfully navigating uncharted territory. Following a review of 13 research studies in higher education leadership, five central themes concerning pandemic leadership ultimately formed the basis of this literature review: open and effective communication, leading with compassion and care, flexible leadership in the face of uncertainty, transformational leadership, and adaptive leadership.
