This article examines the history and meaning behind universities' coats of arms and logos. It concentrates on the history behind some coats of arms and logos, the sense of identity that these hope to foster and their part in creating a cultural history and organizational saga for the institution. For the purpose of this article, a number of illustrative cases from particular Australian, New Zealand and US universities are utilized. (Contains 5 figures and 87 notes.)
