Implementing Sustainable Institutional Practices
Shepard, Joseph; Johnson, Lewis
Journal of Education for Sustainable Development, v3 n2 p217-220 2009
Recent research has found that few institutions of higher education implemented the necessary strategies to make their campuses sustainable (Thompson and Green 2005). Ironically, universities are the segment of society with the most access to the intellectual capital needed to provide sound sustainable practices and measurements. Having top leadership committed to the implementation of sustainable practices, research and education increases the odds of success. However, with many presidents serving fewer than six years at an institution and the implementation of sustainability programmes potentially taking a couple of decades to be inculcated, Thompson and Green (2005: 8) have suggested that it is of equal importance to have a small contingent of faculty and staff dedicated to operationalising sustainability practices on campuses. The methodology of involving the faculty and staff in collaboration with university leadership has been a key ingredient to the environmental success at Florida Gulf Coast University (FGCU). The environmentally sustainable development of FGCU has not been a linear path to success. It has involved grassroots efforts of the faculty, staff, students and community who challenged the thinking about its construction. The university's progress reaffirms the importance of senior leadership being actively involved in the dialogue that leads to implementation and reaffirms that the optimum method for sustainable development to occur involves and includes all stakeholders. It also demonstrates that even when full support is lacking, success can still be obtained if someone continues to champion environmental sustainability.
