An Art or a Science?
Silberman, Richard
Journal of Education, v183 n2 p11-47 2002
Suggests the importance of finding a way back from the scientific conception of education to an alternative, humanistic understanding, noting that the scientific concept applies general positivist and utilitarian principles to education. Suggests that the teacher-student relationship cannot be scientific, and teachers must view students as fellow rational beings. Concludes that it is not appropriate to look to scientific research to resolve questions about methods and curriculum. (SM)
