Constructing a New Social Identity: Taiwan's Curricular Reforms of the Nineties.
Mao, Chin-Ju
International Journal of Educational Reform, v6 n4 p400-06 Oct 1997
Taiwan's curricular reform focuses on teaching indigenous languages and cultures; reforms are closely associated with a larger social transformation toward liberalization, democratization, and indigenization. Curricular reforms take two forms: a critique of hegemonic ideologies and a cultural reconstruction of identity. Attempts to indigenize the curriculum have previously been taboo under the state's "one China" policy, which suppressed tendencies toward development of Taiwanese consciousness. (31 references) (MLH)
