National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) was begun in 1954 to evaluate and accredit professional preparation programs. In mid-1980s, efforts to streamline and strengthen NCATE standards and processes were initiated to accomplish quality control with less duplication and greater efficiency. A fundamental change from state to national quality assurance will ensure continuing debate over national accreditation standards. (MLH)
