The Word from a Walrus: Five Decades of the History of Education Society
Urban, Wayne J.
History of Education Quarterly, v50 n4 p429-459 Nov 2010
This essay is an attempt at an institutional history of the History of Education Society (HES), from its inception in 1960 to the present day. Many of the intellectual currents and cross-currents, as well as the "History of Education Quarterly" (HEQ), the journal of the HES in which these intellectual movements were featured, are slighted in this presentation. The author deals extensively with one intellectual movement within the field, the Bernard Bailyn-Lawrence Cremin critique of the field as too institutional and intellectually narrow, because it was so intimately involved with the creation of the HES, and the attendant de-emphasis, if not rejection, of the institutional history of education that was dominant in the pre-HES history of education organization. He begins this account with a look at two earlier attempts to address the history of the History of Education Society, one in 1999 and the other in 1989. Both of these efforts were conducted as part of meetings of the History of Education Society, and each anticipated an anniversary, the fortieth anniversary in 2000 and the thirtieth anniversary in 1990. Then, the author discusses conflicts that occurred within the early HES and offers examples of conflict to show that occasional dissent and dispute reflected both the specific issue over which it occurred and a larger fault line in the organization that dated back to its very inception.
