Teaching approaches in economic geography traditionally cover the effects of deindustrialization on the landscape but offer less insight into the development of services as a prominent sector, because of the longer histories of manufacturing and industrial economies (Moore and Hunt 2016). Incorporating services into economic geography curricula can provide fresh subject matter for both students and instructors. With this framework in mind, the exercise presented in this paper addresses the key issues of making course work relevant to students through the implementation of an in-class exercise. The exercise incorporates services into an in-class activity where students are responsible for identifying the location of customers shopping at one of two gas stations in a local community. From there, the students delineate the market areas for each gas station and respond to a series of questions regarding the processes used during the exercise. This lesson is designed as a geography and marketing combination for high school students and is also useful for introductory college level geography instruction. Human geography, economic geography, and urban geography courses would also be appropriate outlets to employ this lesson.
