A Catholic Pedagogy Founded in Faith and Reason
Pintado, Patricia
Current Issues in Catholic Higher Education, v25 n2 p143-156 Sum 2006
Fr. Luigi Giussani was once asked the following question: "Do you consider yourself an educator?" He replied, "I would certainly like to be one, because a human relationship worthy of its name must include the communication of that truth which has become life experience." The purpose of this article is to examine the writings of Italian theologian, Luigi Giussani, looking specifically at his only work published in English on the question of education, "The Risk of Education." In this book there are some important themes that make up the core of his thought. The first is philosophical realism, which he also calls "the existence of meaning," which can be understood in contrast to the contemporary ideology that exalts freedom, setting it over against truth. The second theme concerns whether there is something distinctive about a Catholic education; in education, and more specifically in communicating the faith, Giussani places great importance upon the students' personal verification of the educator's proposal. In turn, the centrality of verification introduces a third theme, tradition as the point of departure for the students' personal work. Giussani's pedagogy explores a fourth and final theme, namely, the process through which this tradition comes alive within a true relationship between the educator and the students.
