Engineering for Sustainable Development and the Common Good
Kelly, William E.
Current Issues in Catholic Higher Education, v25 n1 p43-64 Win 2006
In 1994, the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) updated its Code of Ethics to include specific statements on sustainable development and at about the same time, 1994, ASCE adopted its Policy 418 on sustainable development. Sustainable development as defined by ASCE "is the challenge of meeting human needs for natural resources, industrial products, energy, food, transportation, shelter and effective waste management while conserving and protecting environmental quality and the natural resource base essential for future development" (ASCE, 2004). More than ten years later, there is still a lack of agreement on the meaning of sustainable development and sustainability in engineering; some may still express the view that sustainable development is anti-engineering. At a meeting with the ASCE institute representatives in late summer 2004 that the author attended as a member of ASCE Committee on Sustainability it was apparent that sustainable development is not high on the agenda of any of ASCE's technical institutes. What sustainability means to the engineering profession will continue to evolve but students would benefit, in my view, by joining in the discussion of the issues surrounding sustainable development. At a Catholic university, students would further benefit if the discussion were framed in the context of the common good and Catholic social teaching.
