College Students' Postings on Yik Yak: Is It All Negative?

As a way to communicate with each other about their lives, 50-80% of college students use social media. Though research can focus on the negative aspects (i.e., cyberbullying) of online platforms, is it truly only used for this type of negative communication? The purpose of our study was to ascertain what types of messages college students post in Yik Yak, an anonymous social media platform. Using a Glaserian approach to constant comparative analysis, we open and selective coded 2,100 screen shots of yaks, which revealed six themes. Yaks were categorized as Neutral/Daily Life (42.9%), Negative/Derogatory (22.7%), Help Seeking (17%), Sexual Content (7.6%), Positive/Supportive (5.6%), and Alcohol/Drug Content (4.1%). Administrators can use this knowledge of college students' social media usage to their advantage in that they can educate as well as encourage students to utilize online platforms to form positive social connections.
