Improved School Attendance through Adult Volunteer Reading Partners
Volkmann, Brian; Bye, Lynn
Children & Schools, v28 n3 p145-152 2006
Poor school attendance is a problem in many schools throughout the United States. A study was conducted on students in an elementary school who were all paired with adult volunteer reading partners to assess whether attendance improved the year the reading program was implemented. The study involved a pre- and posttest exploratory research design using attendance data comparing the total attendance of all students in the school over two years. Individual daily attendance was also examined to determine whether students were more likely to attend school on the days they met with their adult reading volunteer. Findings from the study showed no difference in the average number of days students were absent from school, but students were more likely to attend school on the days when they were scheduled to meet with their adult reading partners. School social workers have an important role to play in facilitating similar programs that may benefit students.
