Let Social Interaction Flourish
Case, Anny Fritzen
Educational Leadership, v73 n5 p51-55 Feb 2016
The author describes lessons learned--through a high school project that grouped English language learners with native speakers to create a video--about ways to foster respectful, productive interaction among English learners and peers who are native speakers. The potential benefits of students who are just learning English interacting socially and working on school projects with native speakers are many. But with the social aspect of collaboration, and the accompanying feelings of vulnerability, being top in the minds of most teenagers, getting such interaction going is tricky. Case shares four strategies, with examples of how she used them in her after-school project: (1) acknowledge that interactions will be challenging; (2) cultivate a person-first perspective; (3) choose multimodal, multicultural tasks; and (4) balance structure and flexibility.
