Shakespeare: To Teach or Not To Teach. Second Edition. Revised.
Foster, Cass; Johnson, Lynn G.
Designed to supplement the "Shakespeare for Children" series, this guidebook can be used by teachers who have no dramatic training or particular experience with Shakespeare and with students from elementary to high school. The book begins with a rationale for teaching Shakespeare to children and a comprehensive introduction which includes background on Elizabethan England. The book then presents teaching methodologies, with instructions on preparation and a 6-day presentation of the play's text. The book also contains concise directions for making scenery, costumes, and props. One effective and creative section of the book is "Activities across the Curriculum," which explores the world of Shakespeare through subjects such as social studies and science and health. This section includes activities such as crossword puzzles, a scavenger hunt, scale model-making, and warm-up games. The book suggests that these activities can be adapted for any educational level. Additional suggestions, a chronology of Shakespeare's plays, a list of Shakespeare festival locations, and a bibliography are also included. (NKA)
