E-Mentoring: Confidence Intervention for Senior Nursing Students Preparing for Readiness to Practice
LaRose, Patrick S., Sr.
ProQuest LLC, D.N.P. Dissertation, Capella University
The role of the registered nurse has evolved over the years as technology has changed and the practice of nursing has advanced. There are many factors that influence how a new nurse enters practice; however, confidence appears to play a large role in the way nursing students see themselves and how this self perception regulates transition to practice. Consequently the ability of the new graduate to evolve into a strong core member of the health care team is often tempered by time for transition and the need for mentoring from an experienced registered nurse. Confidence development is driven by knowledge, skill, and experience. This capstone project describes an intervention to improve confidence by allowing senior nursing students with the opportunity to explore thoughts and feelings about readiness for practice through an electronic learning management system platform. The intervention associated with this project explored e-Mentoring as an adjunctive approach to professional development for a confidence intervention. The intervention sampled a total of sixteen (n = 16) senior nursing students from an associate's degree in nursing program (ADN program). Participants were surveyed before and after the intervention to assess change through a simple comparison. Initial results from the project demonstrated an increase of 31% in self-reported confidence, 28% increase in self-reported confidence in critical thinking, and a 25% increase in satisfaction with the use of an e-Mentoring platform.
