Help seeking is an important developmental skill, a form of behavioral, or social, self-regulation employed by cognitively, behaviorally, and emotionally engaged learners. Help seeking is unique among learning strategies as it may imply that learners are incapable of task completion or satisfactory performance without assistance, which can be threatening to self-worth. Many college students fail to seek needed help, considering it an admission of defeat, embarrassing, and something to be avoided whenever possible. In this chapter, the authors review research on help seeking as a self-regulated learning strategy and describe a set of interventions designed to promote effective use of help seeking.
