Self-Determination Theory and Higher Education Student Development
Hove, Tad A.
ProQuest LLC, Ph.D. Dissertation, Fielding Graduate University
Self-determination theory (SDT) posits a framework for human motivation, highlighting an individual's interactions and perceptions of his or her environment. Research incorporating a SDT framework has identified antecedents of psychological need satisfaction (PNS) in human motivation. Individual motivation broadens levels of social interactions as a student internalizes stimuli and integrates it into his or her personal life. In an institutional environment, at both the micro and macro levels, divers social interactions inspire interest towards goals and purpose for the individual. Therefore, measuring the motivation a student has internalized, and sources of motivational support, provides direction to management as to the level of integration a student has attained within the institution of Higher Education. This study examines influencing factors which motivate students to engage in a mindful internalization and integration process. Individual integration supports a student's identity development and is the underpinning for sustainable motivation at a University of Higher Education.
