Facilitating Employee Recruitment and Retention through On-Site Child Day Care.
Lombardo, Kathy A.
An early childhood educator at a 360-bed community general hospital implemented a licensed on-site child care program for children between 6 weeks and 10 years of age in order to improve employee recruitment and retention by assisting employees with appropriate child care arrangements. A parent questionnaire was used to assess the degree to which the availability of high quality child care influenced employees' ability to begin or return to employment, remain employed, and increase time available to work. Success of the practicum intervention was defined as demonstrated when a minimum of six new employees began work and six present employees remained employed, increased the number of hours worked, or changed shifts due to the availability of on-site child care services. Employees who returned to work after a leave were included in the evaluation sample. Data indicated that practicum objectives were met or exceeded in the areas of recruitment and retention. (RH)
