Use of Black English and Racial Discrimination in Urban Housing Markets.
Massey, Douglas S.; Lundy, Garvey
Urban Affairs Review, v36 n4 p452-69 Mar 2001
Compared male and female speakers of white middle class English, black accented English, and black English vernacular in their telephone contacts with rental agents who were advertising apartments for rent in Philadelphia. Results found clear, dramatic evidence of telephone-based racial discrimination. Callers perceived as lower class black females experienced the most significant discrimination. (SM)
