The Curriculum Improvement Project in Business Careers Programs: Business Manager, Officer Administrator, Real Estate Agent, Real Estate Broker.
College of the Mainland, Texas City, TX.
In 1987, the College of the Mainland undertook a project to update curricula in real estate, business management, and office technology. The project entailed a survey of the labor market to clarify personnel needs in selected fields; the use of the DACUM (Developing a Curriculum) process, which involved expert workers in the creation of task descriptions for their occupations to be used to verify or reject course content; and a variety of activities to evaluate current program offerings and needs. Using a composite of all evaluations, the faculty confirmed the short- and long-term need for training in real estate sales and brokerage, business management, and office technology. The project report provides: (1) an overview of the activities and outcomes of the curriculum review and development project; (2) a description of the methods and findings of the labor market survey of 800 local firms; (3) DACUM process results for each program, including a description of the participants in the DACUM workshops, a DACUM chart showing job duties and related tasks, and detailed task analyses for each occupation; and (4) a plan for articulated programs with secondary and other post-secondary institutions in the Mainland Texas area.
