Colorado Outward Bound School Rafting Manual.
Brown, Al
River rafting trips at the Colorado Outward Bound School (COBS) present participants with an opportunity for developing self-confidence, self-awareness, and concern for others through challenging and adventuresome group effort, combined with a program of instruction in rafting skills, safety consciousness, and awareness of the natural environment. The manual indicates what is expected of a COBS rafting instructor before, during, and after river trips. Designed for the highly qualified river man, it should not be considered a complete "how-to" manual for the novice boater, but rather a reference for study to which material can and should be added. Outward Bound goals, objectives, methods, staff roles and responsibilities, guidelines, and emergency procedures are presented. The manual also details the purpose, key points, and safety measures of 15 river trip learning activities including camp craft, raft mechanics and boating equipment, rapids running, hiking, solos, and reading and campfire programs. Curriculum outlines for the Yampa, Green River, and Colorado River courses include season duration, special considerations, itineraries, and sample daily programs. The appendices include detailed lists of river equipment; general cooking guides and menu ideas; specific quidelines for sanitation, raft maintenance and repair, emergency techniques, and evacuation procedures.
